Michael Hauty completed his facilitator training with SubtleWinds Cohort #1 and now serves as the lead instructor for their Neuroscience & Pharmacology modules. His relationship with the psychedelic movement began in the late 1960s, profoundly shaping him over the decades.
He earned his MD degree in 1983 and has an extensive background in general and trauma surgery, with twenty years of practice, alongside six years as an emergency physician. This experience has allowed him to assist patients from diverse backgrounds and has influenced his preference to remain a generalist facilitator, particularly focusing on terminal anxiety and existential crises. His medical background uniquely positions him to connect therapeutically with medical professionals experiencing burn-out and workplace trauma, as well as those exploring the field of psychedelic medicine. As regulations evolve, he is eager to guide psilocybin journeys in more intimate settings like homes, hospices, and nursing homes.
His involvement in harm reduction at festivals and mass gatherings has given him insight into the range of adverse outcomes from unregulated psychedelic use. He has been a staunch supporter of Measure #109 from its start, finding participation in Oregon’s psilocybin facilitation experiment both thrilling and humbling.
He believes the client and the medicine perform the necessary work, with the facilitator’s role being to provide a safe container for the journey. He emphasizes the significance of music, color, breath, and movement in enhancing the psychedelic experience, and stresses the importance of proper preparation before and nonjudgmental integration after the sessions.
